Nvidia eyes $3 billion SB Energy stake, $100 billion Ohio credit support
The reported talks tie a SoftBank power unit to OpenAI’s Ohio data center buildout, underscoring how AI financing is spilling into infrastructure.
Nvidia is in talks to invest as much as $3 billion in SB Energy, the SoftBank subsidiary building a large Ohio data center campus for OpenAI, according to The Information. The report also said the proposed investment is part of wider discussions in which Nvidia could provide about $100 billion in credit support for the project.
The latest report adds to a string of recent updates on OpenAI’s infrastructure financing. The Wall Street Journal previously said Nvidia has scaled back its support plan for the project, with an initial guarantee now expected to come in below $120 billion, down from $250 billion previously discussed.
For markets, the reported package links Nvidia not just to chips but also to power and data-center infrastructure, with implications for SoftBank and the broader AI supply chain. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report, and Nvidia and SB Energy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
One important detail: the reported figure is $3 billion, not $300 million. For now, the deal remains a reported negotiation rather than a completed transaction.
